Paintless, traditional, or refinish?
The right method depends on the condition of the paint. If the dent is smooth and the paint is not cracked or chipped, metal can often be massaged back into shape from behind the panel with no new paint at all; our paintless dent repair page covers when that works and when it does not.
If the paint is broken, the metal is creased sharply, or the dent sits on a body line or edge, we usually repair the panel, then prime and repaint it. Scratches follow similar logic: a mark that stays in the clear coat may polish out, while one that reaches primer or bare metal needs refinishing. See dent and scratch repair for more detail.
